Sun-kissed retro fashion shoot with Jess

Here are some more images of actress and model Jessica Elizabeth Swanson for you to enjoy. Here we were looking to create a sun-kissed, retro pinup fashion vibe.

Hair was by Doug Hobbs at Hobbs Hairdressing, Bristol, and we used the garden at the back of his salon for much of the shoot. A brightly-painted wall full of bright oranges and blues, giving a great Mediterranean feel to the images. While it was a bright sunny day, the enclosed garden gave plenty of open shade and it was day to find great angles where Jess would be in soft, flattering light. As a contrast we also shot some images in the sun, and I had the model turn towards the light so the harsher sun would wrap around her face, rather than drag across it causing distracting shadows.

‘Where’s Wally?’ – Performer promo shoot

Here are some snaps from a recent promo photo shoot with Bristol-based performer, Boo, who goes by the stage name, Lou Leigh Blue.

Lou focuses on fun, story-led burlesque routines, often with a satirical edge. This shoot was to provide promotional images for a brand new act based on popular children’s book, Where’s Wally?

Lighting was provided by a Bowens studio flash head with 100cm softbox and fill came from a Canon 580ex bounced from the ceiling, via a Joe Demb Flip-it bounce card.

You can learn more about her acts on her new website, here.

Boudoir burlesque with Ally

Between admin, tidying, and preparing for some big shoots next week, starting with a Sunday wedding, was time for a little bit of boudoir-style photography with local burlesque performer, Ally Katte.

Ally, who bagged Second Place Best New UK Solo at London Burlesque Week in 2011 and has starred in cabaret shows across the country, is someone I’ve shot a number of times – everything from old school pinup, to latex-wear amongst other things. This time things were altogether more relaxed and informal.

We shot at Ally’s Bristol flat, making use primarily of a great weathered leather sofa and a little bit of window light. To avoid backgrounds becoming too gloomy I also used a touch of bounce flash to keep things fresh, and a silver reflector, but nothing to detract from the soft, natural light look.

The lens used was my increasingly-cherised Sigma 50mm f1.4 – you’ll never take this lens off me… never…

Events photography at the Speigeltent, Bath Fringe Festival

Sunday saw me take part in the Exposition of Cabaret, Vintage Fashion in Burlesque. After quite a bust few weeks mostly concerned with commercial photography work it was fun to do something a bit different on a Sunday.

As regular readers of my blog will know I’m quite actively involved in the burlesque and vintage scenes and attending the event was a good way to publicise my portraiture and vintage makeover photography work. To give people a taster I ran a fun photo booth where people could take away a post-card sized snap then and there. I was lucky enough to be assisted by Sarah Charlie Harding, well-known on the local burlesque scene as a stage-hand par excellence.

The booth included various vintage items, quirky paraphernalia and fancy dress so people could have a bit of fun. Although we were working in a very small space – not much more than 6×6′ – we could still turn on the quality. The equipment involved a Bowens Studio flash head with a silver umbrella, a laptop running Lightroom, and a Canon EOS 30D tethered to the machine so images would appear instantly for Exposition visitors to view before prints were made on a commercial Mitsubishi dye-sublimation printer in seconds. Many people were impressed that we’d assembled a complete studio and print lab in such a compact location.

Events Photography, Bristol and Bath

Yours truly showing a visitor their photos on a laptop prior to printing. It's a great set-up I using for my events photography work. Photo: Bertrand Vessier.

It’s the set-up I use for my occasional events photography, everything from charity balls, to burlesque nights, to corporate black tie dinners. I try to get away from the usual bland events shots and try to make each portrait as close a quality, modern studio portrait as possible to give guests a lasting memento from the event. To learn more about events photography, check out this page.

We managed to take some beautiful ‘straightforward’ portraits and some energetic, quirky ones. Burlesque events attract some impeccably-dressed people and none more so that impossibly talented Bath-based swedish comic book artist, Jennie Gyllblad, who I’d conversed with many times online but had never managed to meet in the flesh. As I’d suspected, Jennie proved to be stunningly photogenic, decked out in an ornate belly dance-esque costume, full of sumptuous textures and sparkles which came out a treat on camera. You can enjoy some of her artwork on her website here, and follow her Jespiration! blog here, where you can even find a sketch the artist made of our photo booth.

On stage, visitors were treated to burlesque and cabaret performances from the likes of popular local dance company the Flaming Feathers, ‘poetrix’ Murial Lavendar and the final of the ‘Alternative Queen of Bath’ – a kind of bizarre alternative beauty pageant.

Various vintage and burlesque inspired stalls sold everything from lingerie to vintage fur coats to cupcakes. The Pop Up Parlour were doing a brisk trade turning ladies into vintage bombshells with their exceptional hair and makeup skills.

What really made the event was the Spigeltent location. A Spiegeltent, dutch for ‘mirror tent’, is constructed in wood and canvas, beautifully decorated with mirrors and stained glass. Created as an luxury travelling entertainment venue, spiegaltents originated in Belgium during the late 19th Century. Only a few of these original Spiegeltents existence today and function as major attractions at music and arts festivals.

The Exposition of Cabaret, Vintage Fashion and Burlesque is a Bath Fringe Festival Event held at the famous antique Speigeltent – a most beautiful tented venue indeed.

Baths first “Alternative Queen” competition promises to be a right royal delight.

If you consider yourself slightly bizarre and eccentric then you are most cordially invited to enter this regal jubilee pageant. Part of this years Fringe Festival, The Alternative Queen of Bath contest will form the finale of the Exposition of Cabaret, Vintage Fashion and Burlesque, in association with Smutter & Snells and Bath Fringe, being held at the Speigeltent on the afternoon of Sunday 10th June.

Taking inspiration from Andrew Logan’s ‘Alternative Miss World’ this true diamond event promises to be a right royal delight. The theme will be of course ‘60 Glorious Years’ and contestants costumes and titles should reflect a momentous event that has occurred since 1952. It could be their birth, death, punk, space travel, the digital age or they could enter simply because they are truly blue blooded!

The photo both will feature real studio lighting and enable visitors to get a taste of my portraiture work for a much lower price and learn more about by vintage and pinup makeover experiences.

Bowling alley fashion, The Lanes, Bristol

Recently, I enjoyed a great test shoot with amazing model and actress Jessica Elizabeth Swason, part of which included some retro fashion pinup-influences shots at The Lanes, Bristol.

Hair styling was done by Doug Hobbs at Hobbs Hairdressing, Bristol, organiser of the immensly popular Hobbs Shows with makeup work done by Jasmine Rogers, a talented makeup student at City of Bristol College.

The Lanes is a city-centre Bowling alley, decked out in a retro, 1950s style, so made a great backdrop for this part of the shoot, which could be called ‘vintage pinup with a modern twist’. For lighting, I mixed the ambient and natural light with a Bowens Softlight reflector – one of my favouring lighting modifiers – to give a studio-like ‘hyped’ feel to the shot. Not much Photoshop was needed, but Lightroom was used to boost contrast and darken/saturate certain colours.
