Alt model mini-shoot

I enjoyed a fun little shoot with fab Bristol-Based model Chantelle last week. Chantelle had been enjoying some shoots recently and had a Model Mayhem page with plenty of ‘alt’ like images. As there’d been a lot of fetish elements in recent fashion collections from the likes of Louis Vuitton I thought shooting the model in more of a ‘fashion’ style might be fun and give her a different look in her portfolio.

I sent her a brief mood board showing some cool fashion images and some drawn from classic european horror movies, which seemed to chime with the style and had an interesting aesthetic.

The photographs were shot in my small home studio, making use of a silver bounce umbrella and Bowens Softlite reflector. Chantelle took care of her own makeup.

Sadly, I don't get as much time as I'd like to rock out on the guitar these days. Still this custom red-and-orange Zilla Cabs amp cabinet and sunburst Gibson ES335 were great props to set off Chantelle's rock chick looks.

Shooting the catwalk at Essex Fashion Week, Woolston Manor

I recently attended Essex Fashion Week with ShootDHS models, Bath, who were one of the events sponsors, providing many of the catwalk models.

Before I set off, many people asked if it’ll be like The Only Way is Essex, or TOWIE for short, a TV show I’d never seen but had vaguely heard of and a bit of YouTubing filled me in. Yes, it was a bit like that! The organisers were keen to make it a real Essex event, showcasing a variety of locally-based designers and labels.

As well as some behind-the-scenes action I shot parts of the main catwalk show as well as a few Essex ‘slebs.

Catwalk shows can vary in size and complexity, some featuring breakdancing, songs and  other extras but for the photographer it’s the lighting that will determine if first-rate photographs can be obtained. At Essex there was generally enough light to get sharp images with a fast lens, although as the catwalk was spotted with pools of light, the models would dip in and out of the gloom, making metering trickier than usual. Still, I’ve sometimes shot fashion shows that are bathed in flickering disco lighting, which can be even more of a challenge – high-end events like London Fashion Week tend to keep catwalks brightly and evenly lit as getting great images into the world’s media is a key priority.

In any catwalk show you only get a moment to grab a winning photo – some models barely pause at all, while others are sophisticated enough to milk their moment at the end of the runway and increase their chance of being featured in a paper, magazine or on a website.

Sometimes the name of the game is to pretty much blanket-cover every brand or designer but as I was looking to get more of a general feel of ShootDHS Models’ involvement with the event I could mix it up a bit, try different angles, approaches, and looks rather than simply shooting straight down the catwalk the whole time.

Behind the scenes work can be fun too – but at some shows there isn’t much space for hair stylists, makeup artists and dressers to work in. In the real world catwalk models often work really hard – a huge amount of grueling preparations and practice runs are required to put on a show that’ll wow fashion lovers at an event.

‘Dark suit’ – model test fashion shoot, Bristol

I recently had a small test shoot with Bristol-raised model Ozy Hussian. A Computing student and part-time model, Ozy was keen to show a bit more versatility in his portfolio, which currently contained some good sports/streetwear images.

The obvious thing to do was involve a suit but dress it up in a way that wouldn’t be out of place with Ozy’s personal style.

To make things interesting, I thought we’d approach the shoot as if we were devising a small magazine feature with the title, ‘One high-street suit, four looks’ – the idea to take the same suit and go from workwear through to clubwear. A lot of young guys get their first suit for weddings, funerals, graduations and the like so our imaginary magazine feature would showcase a few cool looks beyond this. So, in other words, I turned personal stylist for the day. Gok Wan – watch out.

The four styles created were:

  1. A sharp workwear look, where Ozy would look the part thrashing out a big deal with a top client.
  2. A dress-to impress partywear look.
  3. A rock’n'roll dress-down gig look.
  4. A cool night-on-the-tiles clubbin’ look.

Not bad stuff from one inexpensive high street suit!

Lighting-wise I wanted to introduce loads of drama. The model was primarily lit by my Bowens Softlite reflector and a Bowens Gemini 500 studio flash. The Bowens Softlite a kind of beauty dish, which gives a great compromise between hard and soft light. It’s best when you can get it quite close to the model. A slight lick of fill was sometimes used too, provided by another Bowens Gemini and a ‘soft silver’ bounce umbrella.

À la mode – French model, Raphaella

Following on from my previous blog on the Private Vintage club, I mentioned an impromptu mini-shoot with ShootDHS model, Raphaella. Here are a few images from that two minute session.

I first encountered Raphaella at another fashion show a couple of weeks back, and captured a couple of nice window-light images for her, and wasn’t surprised to find out she’d since been snapped up by an agency.

The lighting was quick and easy: A simple Canon flash set on manual, bounced into a small folding ‘soft silver’ umbrella. To avoid mixed lighting problems the image were shot at a low ISO to kill the ambient light. The umbrella gives a pleasing wraparound light, and shooting at a wide(ish) aperture allowed a little background blur to enter the frame.

To find out more about the model, see her page on the ShootDHS website.

C’est tout.

Bath’s Private Vintage Club – retro fashions and luxury lingerie

Private Vintage Club was an event put together by Bath lingerie boutique Hannah Dulcie and purveyors of quality retro couture, Scarlet Vintage. Audiences were treated to champers and canapés served up by Buttlers.

The event took place at Bath’s compact, virtually hidden Opium Bar, with deliciously opulent and quirky decor providing the perfect setting. Before the show proper began, I was able to do a mini shoot with one of ShootDHS Models’ more recent recruits, Raphaella, creating a ‘mini studio’ with my Canon flash bounced into a small folding umbrella.

Fabulous models were supplied by local agency ShootDHS, with ringmaster Dave Hill-Souch making sure the runway shows went off without a hitch, while extravagant hair styling was provided by Bath’s Artizan salon. Dave’s stable of talent includes Geisha Go Disco, who runs Bath’s popular Coco Boudoir Burlesque shows, and she served up a few burlesque moves to whoops and applause.

Hannah Dulcie boutique can be found at 13 Milsom Place, Bath while Scarlet Vintage occupies 5 Queen Street.

Album art photo shoot with Bristol’s Rita Lynch

Back in the summer, I took some images to be used on Bristol singer-songwriter Rita Lynch’s forthcoming album.

Rita is one the major draws on the Bristol live music scence, a singer who achieved a decent profile UK the early 1990s, when she was often mentioned in the same breath as P J Harvey, and was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary. Her music was been used in a Channel 4 drama, Rosebud,British horror movie, Vampire Diary and has appeared on many CD compilations. Rita plays what can be described as exhilarating, emtionally-charged stripped down rock and roll.

Her 2001 album All Dressed Up is a true noughties classic. In recent years she has also played guitar and provided backing vocals for Bristol indierock legends, The Blue Aeroplanes, who released a well-recieved new album, Anti-Gravity, this year. Earlier in her career Rita took part in photoshoots which yielded some iconic-looking imagery, where she looks like some punk rock siren or Wendy James… but now favours a more laid back approach to photos.

Our shoot shoot place in daylight in and around Stoke’s Croft, making use of the ‘bear pit’ roundabout and any interesting corners we could find. Three images have been used on the CD packaging and disc.

Maxidress, halterneck dress fashions…

During the summer I enjoyed a small shoot with aspiring local burlesque artist, Missy Bijou, with styling and makeup work provided by Ally Katte. We made use of my ‘living room studio’ using Bowens Gemini studio lighting and a Lastolite Hilite background. Cross-processing and black and white conversions were done with Photoshop.

Shooting MODE Fashion Show, Java Bar, Bristol

The first MODE fashion show hit Bristol’s Java Bar on 8 October, an event that brought a fashion forward audience big brands alongside local designers and boutiques as well as emerging fashion talent from UWE… and I was there to shoot it all…

Models, many sourced from increasingly-influential Bath/London agency ShootDHS run by the energetic Dave Hill-Souch (see previous shoot with Dave here), showcased some of Autumn/Winter’s hottest looks. The catwalk brought audiences styles from big names like Urban Outfitters, BANK, Motel and Firetrap. Locally-based boutiques and designers also impressed with stunning lingerie from retailer of erotic wares Pomegranate, Cheltenham Road’s Portabella, gorgeous gowns and corsetry from Gilly Woo, hip styles from Traffic People and amazing pieces from Amour Fou Couture.

Shooting at Bristol Fashion Week 2011, Cribbs Causeway

I recently photographed the catwalk show at Bristol Fashion Week, an event that takes place at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway and hosted by television style guru Mark Hayes. The event is a chance for the high street to show off the biggest looks for autumns and range from classic vintage stylings from John Lewis and M&S to partywear from the likes of French Connection and Lipsy.
